Polaneczky: Book shows unique side of Civil War

"Pink and Say" by Patricia Polacco (Philomel Books, 48 pp., $14.98)

When young black Confederate soldier Pinkus Aylee finds Sheldon Curtis, a white Union soldier his age, crumpled in a field and close to death after being wounded, Pinkus (A.K.A. Pink) saves him, despite their differences. For days he carries Sheldon (aka Say), until he gets to his own home, and he and his mother nurse Say back to health.

They instantly become close friends and talk to each other about the war, and how it affected them and their families.

This is one of the most touching picture books I've ever read, mostly because it is based on a true story in the author's family. It's a story that had been passed down for generations, and when it got to her, she wrote a book about it (because that's what writers do, isn't it?).
